New CARTA logo unveiled

The Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) has finalized its logo competition and picked a winner. Maurice Oduor, a designer based in Nairobi, was picked as the winner of the competition that saw 14 designers enter more than 30 entries.

Maurice explains the rationale for his winning entry as follows:

“’CARTA is getting into Africa’ - that was my feeling when I was designing the logo.  Colors represent diversity and issues to be researched on. Fonts depict maturity and the professionalism of the logo. It’s a simple logo, executive, and can be used as an organization image in the whole of Africa. Africa is always referred to as a dark continent but the clarity of the African continent in the logo shows that CARTA is coming up with new opportunity, information and help to the whole continent…..”

Selection Process

As at the deadline, a total of 32 entries from 14 designers had been received. 14 APHRC employees were randomly selected and asked to select their best 10 logos from the 32 by ranking them in order of

preference (with 1 being the most preferred and 10 being the least preferred). 10 employees responded and their preferences were ranked. The top six logos were then sent to all Consortium members who were asked to vote for their best three logos. The logo that received the most and highest ranked votes was then declared the winner. The APHRC team then worked with the winner to modify the logo so as to incorporate coamments from the selection process. Below is the final product of this process.

The APHRC team would like to extend its thanks to members of staff who voted for the logos and the PEC team for their invaluable support; the CARTA consortium members and the designers for their numerous creative entries – picking a winner was no easy task.

The logo shall become the face of CARTA as it launches its program in its nine member African universities and as it gains an identity the world over.
