1. MLE of Urban RH Initiative
The full title of the project is “Measurement, Learning and Evaluation (MLE) of the Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (URHI)”. The project started on 01/01/2009 and will end on 11/01/2015. It is funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Its objectives are:
- Monitor and evaluate the impact of URHI within and across target countries (Kenya Nigeria and Senegal) using rigorous study designs and multiple data collection approaches.
- Build country and regional capacity to undertake rigorous measurement and evaluation of population, family planning, and integrated reproductive health activities with a focus on urban and peri-urban poor and vulnerable populations.
- Facilitate knowledge sharing, document and disseminate best practices across the target countries, in the region, and within the global community of practice.
2. ADDRF 3 – IDRC
The project’s full title is "
The African Doctoral Dissertation Research Fellowship Program".
The project was initiated on 01/11/2010 and will end on 01/01/2015.
The overall objective of the project is to provide support for 50 doctoral research awards and enhance the quality of African students' dissertation research by strengthening their research skills and ability to engage in rigorous research.
The specific objectives of the project are as follows:
- To facilitate more rigorous engagement of doctoral students in research addressing governance, equity, health systems, or population related issues in Africa,
- To provide the fellows with opportunity for timely completion of their doctoral training,
- To strengthen doctoral students' research skills by providing training in research methodology and scientific writing.
3. Research on urban population
The full name of this project is
"Consolidating Research on Population, Family Planning and Reproductive Health among the Urban Poor in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Data Collection, Dissemination and Regional Collaboration Initiative".
The project started on 01/09/2011 and will end on 31/08/2014.
This project has been funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Its objectives are:
- Strengthen the evidence base to guide policies and programs aimed at improving the wellbeing of the urban poor through conducting a unique set of cross-sectional and longitudinal surveys in informal settlements;
- Use these and related evidence to advocate and advance policy and action in meeting the reproductive health needs and wellbeing challenges of the urban poor at various local, national, regional and global forums;
- Build the research capacity of young and promising African scholars through a doctoral research grants program and related efforts, and
- Build strategic partnerships with other urban health research institutions in sub-Saharan Africa to strengthen and consolidate the generation and use of evidence on urban reproductive health challenges across sub-Saharan Africa.
4. Scale-up project
The full title for this is "Sustainable Model for Cardiovascular Health by Adjusting Lifestyle and Treatment with Economic Perspective in Settings of Urban Poverty Scale-Up Project".
The project started on 01/08/2011 and will end on 15/07/2014. It is funded by the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development.
Its main objective is :
To develop, implement and evaluate effective and low cost community-based interventions for primordial and primary prevention and management of cardiovascular risk factors suitable for scaling up in slum settings in sub-Saharan Africa.
5. CARTA Carnegie
The full title of the project is “Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA)”. The project started on 01/04/2011 and will end on 31/03/2014. It is funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York.
Its objectives are:
- Support institutional capacity of participating African universities to conduct high quality research by improving research infrastructure; strengthening project development and grant writing skills; enhancing research management and administration; and establishing appropriate policies and incentives to enhance research productivity.
- Strengthen doctoral training in Africa to enhance the local production of well-trained researchers and scholars. This will be achieved through the creation of a regional multidisciplinary training and supervisory program in public and population health.
6. CARTA Ford
The full title of the project is “Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA)”. The project started on 01/03/2010 and will end on 31/03/2012. It is funded by Ford Foundation.
Its objectives are:
- Strengthening doctoral training programs in sub-Saharan Africa through the creation of a regional multi-disciplinary training and supervisory program involving several African universities and research centers of excellence
- Securing sexuality as a field of study by facilitating the creation of a doctoral program around this subject. The 'ideal sexuality doctoral program envisioned here is one that would highlight sexuality as the multi-and inter-disciplinary field that it is, linking it with a strong policy research agenda.
7. Malaria Survey
The full title for this project is
"APHRC-PSI Affordable Medicines Facility-Malaria (AMFM) Endline Outlet Survey".
The project started on 01/08/2011 and will end on 29/02/2012.
Its objective is:
- Work with Population Services International (PSI) to conduct the endline outlet survey in Kenya which includes data collection, analysis and reporting.
8. Maternal Health Dialogue
The full name of the project is “Advancing Policy Dialogue on Maternal Health in Africa”. The project started on 23/03/2011 and will end on 21/12/2011. It is funded by Woodrow Wilson International Centre for Scholars (WWICS).
Its objectives are:
- Create a platform for field workers, policy makers, program managers, media, and donors to share research, disseminate lessons learned, present maternal health toolkits, and address concerns related to policy, institutional, and organizational capacity building.
- Foster greater south-to-south exchanges and promote south-to-south cooperation in support of national capacity development.
- Identify the knowledge gaps and research questions needed to improve the maternal health topic.
- Increase maternal health partnerships and networks in-country and abroad
- Share lessons learned with maternal health change makers and improve programs and policies.
9. Reversing the Stall of Fertility Decline
The full title of the project is "Reversing the Stall of Fertility Decline in Western Kenya". The project started on 21/09/2009 and will end on 20/09/2012. It is funded by Packard Foundation
Its Objectives are:
- The project’s near-term goal is to increase routine use of modern contraceptive methods among Kenyan women of reproductive age. This will be done through improved supply of family planning services at community level and facility level, including improved capacity of public and private providers and community based distributors in implementing a sustainable family planning program, and improved demand for family planning services through effective outreach and information, education, and communication (IEC) materials development.
The program includes a strong monitoring and evaluation component so that it can provide evidence on effectiveness and impact of reproductive health interventions in increasing contraceptive use and reducing fertility levels.
10. Vaccination Project
The full title of the project is "Monitoring and Assessing the Impact of Vaccinations and Other Childhood Interventions for Both Boys and Girls".
The project started on 01/09/2010 and will end on 31/08/2012. It is funded by INDEPTH network.
Its objective is:
To assure evidence-based policies for vaccine and preventive drug delivery in low-income countries (LIC) in order to reduce child morbidity and mortality
11. iShare Project
The full title of the project is “Indepth Network Sharing and Access Repository Project”. The project started on 01/07/2011 and will end on 30/06/2013. It is funded by INDEPTH Network.
iShare is a standardized and centralized data access platform of multiple participating HDSS sites under the INDEPTH platform. The repository is expected to provide data users with better pattern identifications on existing data sets for research and/or data amongst themselves easily and more effectively for cross site analysis.
12. Resource Flows Project
The full title of the project is "Financial Resource Flows for Population Activities". The project started on 01/04/2011 and will end on 31/03/2012. It is funded by UNFPA through Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute, (NIDI).
Its objectives are:
- Implement the 2011 Domestic Survey in sub-Saharan African countries
- Develop, implement and document a system of quality control on resource flows for population and health is Africa.
13. Meeting the Unmet Need for Family Planning
The full title of the project is “Meeting the Unmet Need for Family Planning and Improving Access to Safe Abortion Services (renamed STEP UP – Strengthening Evidence for Programming on Unintended pregnancy)”. The project started on 01/01/2011 and will end on 31/01/2012. It is funded by Population Council.
Its objective is:
- To generate policy-relevant research that promotes the use of an evidence-based approach for improving access to family planning (FP) and safe abortion in Kenya, Ghana and Senegal.
As a result of this research, reproductive health programs will be strengthened and expanded so that they function more effectively and efficiently, increasing quality service coverage while they address women’s and men’s reproductive health rights and foster increased political commitment to maternal health. By the end of the project, the research will have developed and evaluated innovative service delivery and financing models to increase the range of options available to policymakers and programme managers.
14. Fertility and Poverty Project
The full title of the project is “Fertility and Poverty: The Role of Gender and Reproductive Health” The project started on 01/04/2010 and will end on 31/03/2013. It is funded by NTNU Social Research
Its Objectives are:
- To understand the interplay of fertility and poverty and its impact on gender systems in two different cultural and religious contexts
- To analyze ways in which reproductive health and child mortality impact fertility and poverty in the household
- To synthesize findings from case studies and large scale surveys.
15. Masculinities project
The full title of the project is “Masculinities, Wellbeing, and Civic Engagement: A study of slum men in Nairobi, Kenya”. The project started on 01/02/2010 and will end on 31/01/2012. It is funded by Ford Foundation.
Its Objectives are:
- To understand how economic difficulties and urban poverty stresses have shaped masculinity practices as well as relationships, health and wellbeing, and civic engagement among slums men in Nairobi, Kenya.
- Explore how men perform their masculinities; their relationships with women, civic engagement, parenthood, source of livelihood; their involvement in gang groups and community perception towards men who are considered men and those who are not considered men.
- Findings of this study will contribute to the literature on masculinities and inform policy makers to improve the lives of men, women and children in informal settlements in sub-Saharan Africa.
16. ERP III Project
The full title of the project is “Education Research Program – Understanding the Dynamics of Access, Transition and Quality”. The project started on 21/03/2011 and will end on 21/03/2013. It is funded by William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
The main objectives of this project include:
- Strengthen our evidence by expanding our geographical coverage to include cross sectional study of schooling patterns in additional slum sites in Kenya.
- Assessing the quality of early grade education through learning assessment and classroom observation study in Kenya.
- Analyze existing longitudinal data collected under ERP I and II.
17. ADDRF 2 – IDRC
This project is known as "Scaling up the APHRC-IDRC Doctoral Research Awards Program".
It started on 01/03/2009 and will end on 29/02/2012.
The project’s objectives:

18. Improving the Lives of Diabetics
The full title of the project is "Improving the Lives of Diabetics in Nairobi's Slum through Access to Quality Health Care".
Its objectives are:
- Improve the capacity of primary health care level facilities serving three Nairobi slums and offer services for chronic diseases which are in line with the level of expertise available at these facilities
- Improve the skills of health providers in the management of diabetes and other health problems with emphasis on the use of integrated guidelines and patient empowerment
- Strengthen the linkages between the public and private sectors in health by harnessing resources from both sectors and complimenting each others’ strengths in providing care for diabetes and its co-morbidities
- Enhance community capacity to respond to diabetes through creation of patient and family support groups
- Generate evidence to support the allocation of resources (especially drugs) to primary level health facilities for the management of chronic diseases
19. EAQEL Project
The full title of the project is “East African Quality in Early Learning, (EAQEL)”. The project started on 30/03/2009 and will end on 31/12/2011. It is funded by William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
Its objectives are:
- To determine whether the intervention leads to improved learning outcomes in mathematics and reading among children enrolled in primary grades 1, 2 and 3.
- To determine if there is a critical difference in the learning outcomes of children enrolled in grades 1, 2 and 3 attributable to the two different treatment models (core model and core plus model) as proposed by Aga Khan Foundation.
- To determine the key contributing factors that lead to improvements, if any, in numeracy and literacy in grades (1, 2, and 3).
20. CARTA Wellcome Trust
The full title of the project is “Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA)” The project started on 01/08/2009 and will end on 31/07/2014. It is funded by Wellcome Trust.
Its objectives are:

21. Fertility and Family Planning
The project is known as "Fertility, Family Planning, Child Health Survival and Economic Outcomes" and was initiated on 01/05/2010 and will end on 31/01/2012. It is funded by INDEPTH Network.
Its objective is:
To explore the longitudinal potential of Health Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) date for understanding fertility and wellbeing dynamics in the communities under study.
The major achievement of this project will be the publication of five papers based on longitudinal framework.
22. WHO Regional Agenda
This project’s full title is "WHO Regional Agenda on Accelerating Universal Access to Sexual Reproductive Health and Reproductive Health". This is a partnership between WHO and APHRC.
It was initiated on 25/07/2011 and ended on 10/08/2011.
23. CAPACITY PLUS
This project addresses the need to train and support the health workforce in gaining relevant skills in their respective jobs. APHRC will plan and implement evaluation programmes that will assess the quality and success of such programs.
The project commenced on 10/01/2010 and ended on 30/09/2011.
The project aims:
- At establishing partnerships with key global agencies and organizations to provide leadership in human resources for health (HRH) to address HRH crisis
- To develop, implement and strengthen HRH management policies and systems.
- To disseminate generated knowledge to promote use of evidence in human resources for health (HRH) approaches
24. Health Policy Review- Mozambique
The full title of the project is "National Health Policy Review Mozambique". The project started on 23/05/2011 and ended on 30/09/2011. It was funded by World Health Organization (WHO).
Its objective is:
Provide technical support to the Ministry of Health for data compilation and analysis, in collaboration with WHO Geneva and AFRO, for the review of Mozambique’s health progress and performance.
This process will inform the next health sector strategic plan and new policies to replace the existing national health policy titled “Plano Estrategico do Sector Saude 2007-2010” (PESS).
25. Enhancing access to information
This project is known as
"Enhancing Access of Online Information Resources at APHRC". The project started on 12/09/2011 and ended on 14/09/2011. The funder is the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications (INASP).
Its objective is:
- To boost the low number of users of the Center’s e-resources and highlight the importance of these resources to researchers and to conduct capacity building on information searching and retrieval skills.
26. Urban Emergencies Indicators
The project is officially known as "Indicator Development for Surveillance of Urban Emergencies (IDSUE)".
The project started on 15/09/2010 and ended on 14/09/2011. It was funded by the Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) through Concern Worldwide.
Its objective is:
To develop practical test indicators for urban emergencies that will be suitable for triggering humanitarian response.
27. Unsafe Abortion in Kenya
This project is known as the
"Epidemiology of Unsafe Abortions in Kenya".
It started on 26/07/2011 and ended on 26/10/2011.
Its main objective is:
- To support staff in drafting a full protocol and IRB application
for the consortium funded study entitled "the epidemiology of unsafe
